DOUBLE ERASURE 2017
artist book - limited edition of 8
Double Erasure is an artist book based on personal interviews with Eastern European contemporary art professionals, artists, art historians, educators, and philosophers reflecting on the possible technical, personal, cultural or political implications of erasure and subtractive compositional methods. Interviews: Attila Szücs, Gróf Ferenc, ██, Bertrand Glosset, András Edit, Gábor Gerhes, Sándor Hornyik, Tibor Gyenis, Lőrinc Borsos, and Márk Horváth.
Inspired by Roland Barthes, Death of the Author and Derrida’s concept of Trace and writing under erasure, Double Erasure steps beyond the negative connotations of erasure to provoke new readings and interpretations. These diverse narratives, rendered as concrete poetry, ultimately point to personal and culturally specific concerns; frustrations and sparks of hope. The process of translating absence from one language to another and erasure into presence reveals a desire to renew while writing against both the deep cultural blockages of the Eastern European socialist state-sponsored censorship of the past and the increasingly paranoid autocratic present.
“Double erasure. The questions asked in this narrative are based on individual journeys that sculpt a collective state of multi-perspective (un)erasability. This book molds the diverse methods into a double erasure, one that doesn’t silence but highlights. I use interviews as medium. I’m not a writer. I used to be a painter, then an eraser. Now I’m working my way towards becoming able to make again.”
